Hangzhou, south west of Shanghai is a major center for the silk industry and also renowned for its magnificent scenery.
Nanjing is a famous historical and cultural city with many historic sites.
Shanghai, famous for its riverside cityscape, is China's largest city and a major commercial center with many shopping places.
Suzhou, just west of Shanghai, is also known as "Venice of the East". It is an ancient city famous for its canals and gardens.
Xi'an, the oldest city and ancient capital of China, is home to ten dynasties, terminus of the ancient Silk Road, and home of the terracotta warriors (the Terracotta Army of the Qin Dynasty Emperor's mausoleum in Xi'an, a vast collection of full-size terracotta statues of Chinese Imperial soldiers).
Hainan in South China is a higher end budget traveller's dream come true, with lots of resorts and relatively few visitors, except during the national holidays. There is also excellent diving, hiking and beaches to explore.
